Finally my first knife

Well follow the Link at the bottom to my first knife...

I had some problems with it.... It's not the greatest.. but I will do better with the next one.

It's 1095, hand rubbed finish (only to 1000 grit), spalted Maple handle, the small guard is made of 1095 also.. leftover from cutting the steel. Pins are copper wire and a brass brazing rod.

I heat treated it myself in the homemade washtub forge I made. I normalized it, did 3 quenches, and 3 temper cycles in a commercial size toaster oven I got hold of.
I did the brass rod test and it looks good.. bites into the rod.. and doesn't chip or fold.

First Knife

That's it.

Nice

Very nice Fsawyer... Unique blade design, almost a sheepsfoot I guess. Lol you make me not even want to post a picture of my first one. I'm not done yet but I accidentally messed up when I was filing it and put some crators and dents in it(I got impatient and used a carbide cutting bit to do some of the shaping, bad idea).

Great knife...

WoW!!!

Hey buddy!

You sure didn't pick a easy one (like I did)

That handle shape looks cool, and you've got a great guard, and that grind is awesome.

I must say that is quite a challange for a first knife and you did a great job !!!!!

Keep up the good work!!!

Can't wait for knife no. 2 !!!

Keith

Thanks

Thanks

I was hoping some of the old timers and pro knife makers would look at this and give me some points.. tell me something..

I could pick this knife apart myself... the pin placement is wrong.. toooo close to the edge and caused problems when shaping the handle. I had problems with getting a close fit on the guard.. and no matter what you do... if you sand down the handle too far.. you can't glue wood back on. I ended up making the guard smaller..to match the handle..
The Blade is an exact duplicate.. of a knife I own. EXCEPT I put a false edge in and the original didn't have one... I think it kinda looks funny... like a Rhino or something.

The thickness of this blade is too much for such a small knife.. (overall about 8 inches)... I used 3/16 1095 steel.. and had grind problems.. but I got them ironed out.

I wanted to taper the handle.. to take some weight out..etc.. and I haven't completely figured out how to do that.. and keep it flat at the same time.
