Maple Burl

Just thought I would show this one. Its the same blade posted recently but I decided to fit a different handle.

Here is a close up of the handle.....Big Maple burl. I played around with the color to darken it, ...then burnished it with steel wool to show the difference in light and dark colors.
Vacumed the handle in Tung oil to stabilize it.

Very nice. That handle is gorgeous. Like the recurve in the blade too. Good job.

Thanks for the comments.

The burl was cut from a block of 'Big Leaf Maple'.....nothing too exotic...a light pine wood color.

I rubbed some 'Majestic Maple Stain' (chromium trioxide and water) into the handle and let it dry. This darkens the wood. Then rubbed it lightly with steel wool to lighten it...till the pattern in the burl was highlighted.

Soaked the handle in Tung oil for several days (under a vacum)..it was quite porous so soaked up the oil quite well.

Let it air dry, buff with a cloth. Steel wool again to bring out the highlights and finished with Renaissance wax.

Kevin.

Soft alloys like copper, brass and nickel silver works ok.
