Help with a Wood mk.1

A friend just brought be a knife to sharpen. It's marked:

Wood Knives
mk.1
Venice, Calif.

It opens like a butterfly, but looks like a standard folding knife. It has linen micarta scales.

Does anyone have any information on this guy?

Steve

He is very old, lives in Colo now, and made most of his knives in the 70s and 80s. He was an engineer who lived in Venice, Calif, and made knives as a hobby for many years. Mike Irie married his daughter and started the Wood folders up again for a few years. I collect them on a small scale, they are a bit of Southern California knifemaking history.

Thanks Tom, I couldn't put my finger on this one exactly. The thing that really bugs me is I remember seeing this kind of knife on a website I just can't remember where I saw it.

All I can remember is the guy's name is Owen Wood. The Mike Irie connection is what brought it back. Correct me if I;m wrong, Tom, but I think he was the only one making that style of folder. I've seen some older hunting and knife-relaled magazines from the '80's and early 90's and his work looks extremely good. Many of those displayed in the mags were highly embellished too. Jason.

Howdy, all. The maker's name is Barry Wood. As well as selling his own custom-made pieces, his "swing folder" design was used by Pacific Cutlery for an all-metal version and also marketed by Colt in the same style as his original but with Colt markings and a nice leather belt sheath. Lastly, it showed up being made by Frost Cutlery with a "Frostwood" (colored laminate) handle configuration.

Yes, other South Africans .

I had a website for Owen Wood, but it doesn't seem to work anymore.
