How cold you talking?
My personal favorite is cow, sheep, buffalow horn. Provided it has been properly cured and is maintained. Horn has a warm feel even in cold weather, where as mycarta has a cold feel. Mycarta and G-10 will be a lot tougher though. Has to be properly cured though, and waxed ocasionly, or it will start to look like it's still on the animals head, may even crack. Rose wood or cocabolo would also be a good choice, again, with proper maintanace. |

I live in the mountains where I get about six months of winter temperatures. I have had no problems with stabilized woods and Dymondwood. When I use horn or bone I have it professionally stabilized with acrylic and again, no problem ...

when I first started making knives I tested some Dymondwood to see if it lived up to it's billing.....placed a slab in boiling water for 30 minutes, no change....then placed same slab in gas overnight, no problem.....one of the toughest materials on the planet....built a carving knife for my sister-in-law a year and a half ago, she regularly puts it in the dishwasher despite my warnings, still looks like new.....here's the knife made from the slabs I tested....

Dymondwood
I agree with Caveman. This material is cheap, Strong and highly underrated. I know some collecters who wouldnt have one, but for the field and use, its hard to beat.

I have to second (or is it third? ) on the Dymondwood for a user...especially after you said "besides Micarta".
The reason I think Dymondwood has gotten a bad wrap is beacause of some of the color choices available. Look at Bradley's knife for example. Natural in color and very clean looking. Some of the colors they have surprise me in that the would even sell...but yet, you see them pop up every now and again. Some, to me, are downright tacky...but that's just me. I've re-handled kitchen knives with all black and black/silver Dymondwood, and the people have loved them. And yes, I knew they would be thrown in the dish washer. Just my .02 Chris |
