Since your in Calgary, I'd recommend getting in touch with a good friend of mine who lives in Tilley (about 20 mins outsdie Brooks, AB) His name is Jim Clow, and goes by "Boatbuilder" here on the forums. Jim holds week "knife get togethers at his shop.....I would highly encourage you to shoot him an email. He can be a BIG help to you.

Steel for knives is not a common thing in most areas.....it's very likely that you're going to have to order 1080/1084 and I know Jim has lots of 15N20 that he's offering for sale.

Jim's email: jim.clow@jayceewelding.com Tell him I sent you.

Automotive springs are usually 5160 or close, usually the chromium in them will make welding difficult.

Also, 15n20 is also used in band-saw blades.
