4 knives I just finished up.
Well its been awhile since I last posted. I've been really busy and really happy. I got my ABS journeyman smith stamp in Atlanta this year. Anyway... I thought I'd share some recent knives.
See if I still remember how to do this. Small Hunter It has a 3 1/2 inch clay hardened 1084 blade with deep contrasting rope file work on spine (hard to make out in this shot). semi oval textured steel guard. The 4 1/4 inch handle is mortised stag scales, steel pins & thong hole. Squash Blossom knife I call it "Squash Blossom" (its along story) Its a variation on my "shadow box guard" theme. Except this time I tried to do it with the dove tail iron bolsters. I haven't for along time (probably more than a year and half!) edge quenched a blade!! So this one is a trasher utility knife! It has a 4 1/4 inch textured 1084 blade, the 4 1/2 inch tapered tang handle (that I forged to shape) has some kind of wood scales I don't remember what they are!. copper bursts, brass pins & thong hole. This Shadow Box Guard knife is the sister to the Squash blossom. It has a 5 1/2 inchish Clay hardened 1084 blade with Forged scrolls at the choil (boy I'm not sure I'd do that again) and has a full forged distal taper. The Guard is made up of 11 seperate pieces of polished / textured, copper & steel. The 5 inch (6 piece) stag handle has copper, brass, steel pieces with a texture craved pommel. anyway... I need to take the pic at a different angle Michael Price knife One of 9 knives I'm finishing up for Blade West. Its a 5 inch clay hardened 1084 blade with a forged distal taper, Full tang with one piece iron guard, stag scales. (can you spot the trick?) Off to make some sheaths!!! thanx for looking Rik Palm Last edited by Rik Palm; 09-15-2003 at 03:41 PM. |

Rik,
Awesome stuff man! I love that squash bottom knife too! Trick huh? Yeah, I'll bite. The trick is how you got that guard over the "full tang". Chris |

I like every one of them! You take great pictures, too. Good for you.
Trick? I'll hazard a guess it's those crazy 'stag' pins you used on the handle... Coop |

Thanx Guys!
Thanx Everyone!
Good eye Chris, that's the puzzle putting a guard on a full tang knife thats not a frame knife. Jim! thanx! I'm trying to do better with my photos. Here's an old design/new knife, one that I tried to shoot better pics of. My Pocket Arrowhead knife, its the size of a quarter. Closed Open |

The hamon on the Price knife is interesting. Did you do anything special to get the white cloudy zone?

Hi Gabe,
The blade was taken to 800 then backed down to 600 after a short etch (15 sec.) then I used Eagle one white polish paste to clean out the black (oxides). I was really happy with how wide the hamon came out and I think that helped alot. Normally I have to play around with them to get them to pop this one was easy, You can even make out the alloy banding in the hamon. Rik |
