who uses anti-scale compound ?

I wish to get closer to final grind before HT and
am thinking about trying Brownells PBC compound.
Brownells anti-scale powder
Here is another link for the same stuff and
a higher temp compound.Larger containers though.
RoseMill compounds
Avion compound

A search of the archives revealed some people who
like it and some do not.
If you have used it please comment on your experience.Borax stories are also welcome.
Thanks
Mike

I use the Brownells Anti-scale and I have had really good results with it. I take my blades (O1)to about 220 grit, heat to 500 sprinkle on the powder, it melts and bubles, into the HT oven. When the blade is quenched it breaks off leaving a clean blade. One Warning though the excess WILL run off the blade (at least for me) so use something in the bottom of your oven I have a shelf. Hope this helps

The folks that have the most trouble with it are those who try to use it with a forge or a torch. It is actually designed to be used in a heat treating oven/furnace where you have really tight controls over temperature.

It really does not like to be taken over 1650 degrees F. even for a moment.

You've probably already seen my tutorial if you've been doing searches, but just in case, here's a link:

Scale Prevention During Heat Treating

Also, thanks for the link to Rose Mill products. Thats a really good buy on the larger containers. I'm just about ready to order more PBC and may well buy the 5 or 10 pound buckets.
