Oregon Trail Knife

I've had this knife done for a few days but wasn't sure how I wanted to work the sheath since I was going to use moose rawhide a friend had given me. This was the first time messing with it and I'm sure once the rawhide is gone I'll leave it alone but still it works well with this knife. I forgot to measure the knife but I'm sure the blade is just over 6", made from L-6. The fittings are wrought iron and the handle is a real old weathered piece of mule deer crown. Its around 12" overall......

I guess knowone is going to comment on this knife so I will. The rawhide sheath turned into a doggy chew toy so I made another sheath for it. If you have any comments they would be appreciated good or bad.......

Hey,
I really like that! Usually i dont like antler as a handle, but that handle really goes well with the iron fittings. did you trexture the guard? Where do you get your iron? Nice work!

Kyle, Thanks, I was starting to wonder if I didn't put the picture up. Yes the guard has been textured. The wrought iron on this knife came from Eugene, Or. This is from a piece of wagon wheel. I also have anchor chain, some from Eugene and rest from New Bedford, Mass. The stuff I got from New Bedford came out of a junk yard. Wayne Goddard had scored most of what I have that came from Eugene.

nice going on the knife..Your style of knife look very appropriate for the mountain men. I compete in the knife and hawk contests. Like this knife in that it has a unique antique look but very functional. I too live in Oregon guys...central oregon in Redmond.

Shane, Antler is by far my favorite handle material. Now that I've got somewhat organized in the shop I've got most of the antler seperated. I've got alot more of it than I thought but there's still more to find.

As always, very nice. I wish that I could figure out how to treat old antler like that! I like the second sheath much better.
