First knife done, working on 2nd
New guy here.
What do you guys think of my lil onion cutter? I made a mini cleaver do to the fact i needed one and didnt want to shell out monies for one. I used bed frame steel scraps that was used to make a cart. Wood was from an Almond tree I used to smoke meats with. The pins were the most expensive part. Steel pins from the bins at home depot! Not bad and a fun project with using a bench grinder and a few other basic tools. I learn a lot on this alone to help with future projects. I plan on getting a 1x30 grinder and see what I can do with it. I might have a new hobby! Here is the second one I started yesterday. Still working on the grinds and what not, but I like what its turning into. I'll be sure to post it here when done. A lot of great info here and I'm sure I will learn a lot. Thanks |

Considering the tools you had to use the workmanship looks pretty good. The cleaver will no doubt cut onions just fine but it would perform even better if you had used decent steel. If you do choose to get into the hobby you'll want to get some 1084 or 440C for simple projects like that one. Good steel doesn't cost much and the work you do is the same as far as shaping the blade is concerned.......

Thanks for the input. I figure the steel I'm using is good practice to work on grinds and whatnot, so when I get so good steel, I'll have a better idea on what I'm doing. Maybe make throwers or something.

Here is what I've come up with
I like the rough look after heat treating so I lightly sanded it. It holds an edge pretty well. I used Almond wood again and smaller pins. 8.5in x1.5in, just over a 4in blade. I've used it to debone a chicken and works well. I'm happy with it. I like wider blades. Beginner KITH worthy? I have some real steel on order. Any thoughts or feedback is welcomed please. |
