looking for parts
I am in the process of designing folder number 3 and I would like to use one of the top spine thumb studs. The kind that stick out both sides of the blade and are attached to the top spine of the blade. Where do I find these? I checked knife kits and they don't seem to have them.
Also how are they attached, I think they may be screwed into the spine but then how do you thread the hole in the top of the spine. Any suggestions more than welcome. I made one from scrap stainless.
I slotted the top of the spine with an end mill, fitted a rectangular piece of metal tightly in the slot then drilled the rectangular piece for a 0-80 screw. With the rectangular piece in place I spotted the spine for drillling and tapping the 0-80 thread. A little tricky to get the hole square but I used the milling machine and vise to keep the drill then the tap true. Last step was to round the ends of the thumb disc. __________________ george tichbourne www.tichbourneknives.com sales@tichbourneknives.com |

Ya, thumb wheels or thumb discs and Sheffield does carry them, but whether you buy one or make one you'll still have to do the drilling and tapping as George described. I've always thought these discs were a little weak for my tastes. The hole you drill is probably going to be pretty shallow. the threads even shallower (use a plug tap designed for tapping a blind hole), and a 0-80 screw is really tiny.
I made one once, the way George described, but it was wide enough to put in two screws. Then, I didn't round the rectangle much, just took the edges off. Seemed like a good method for a larger knife .... |
