Rondel Dagger sheath -- suggestions?
I've had a request to make a sheath for this fine rondel dagger reproduction by Scott Jaqua, and I'd really like some input for an authentic style sheath. The large guard has me a bit stumped -- any ideas? The owner, a rather petite lady, wants to wear it to medeival fairs.

From the stuff I have seen a back-seamed type sheath would be most accurate for that period. It seems like I have seen a picture of an original rondel dagger with its sheath, but I can't remember where. The sheath also surrounded the quillions (disc?), but did not cover the handle like a pouch sheath. Most of the knives in that period were suspended by a frog or thongs.

Mike,
That's a real nice knife. Ya done good. I'm really glad I don't have to figure out how to make a sheath for it but I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Mike, my friend---I, too, believe that a frog would be the way to go. I would make the frog split into a "V" from where it is attached to the sheath and would have a spread of perhaps 4 inches where it wraps the belt. This would act as a stabilizer (no shift or slide) on the belt and would fit a slender waist, as the petite lady would have, without distortiion. The frog could either have a laced cuff or a stud. Authenticity would not be a huge factor but would be close enough for the intended purpose. I wish that Scott would have put a slight chamfer on the edge of the rondels as they look as though they might cut into the leather. Scott did a marvelous composite on that knife and he is to be complimented highly! ---Sandy---

Thanks everbody -- I'm told that few authentic sheaths have survived the centuries, and I've found no good pictures, but you've given me some good ideas.
Sandy, I saw a recent post of one of your bowie sheaths with the split 'V' belt loop -- good idea. She could wear it alternatively as a side knife or tucked in her sash. I also like the coned top picture -- many choices Mike __________________ Trying to become the kind of man my dog thinks I am http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft...E4E363B}&tio=0 |
