those who use files

For those of you who use chainsaw files to do your plunge cut what size file do you use? I have been using 1/8" stock with a 3/16" file not sure what it is yet but I'm not liking the results. If I have a grind that has a grind line say 1/2" from the edge of the blade I have to make a plunge cut taller than 1/2" and sand down some to get a good grind line junction between the plunge grind and the grind line.

edited to add: i don't use anything but files, so using a belt sander isn't possible.
