Robert,
I agree with what Brad said completely, it looks like your tubes could benefit from a change of angle. However, that doesn't mean it won't work the way it is. There will be a hot spot as Brad said but it may not affect you much once you get familiar with your new forge - all forges have some spots that are hotter than others. If it does turn out to be a problem I don't suppose it will be any harder to change it later than it would be to do it now..... |

I would just go with what you have for now and see how it works for you. Just keep in mind for the next forge you build or the next revamp you do to this one that the burners will make more even heat if they are angled.
Im sure that once you start using the forge there will be other ideas you have as you go along to improve your design even more. I built my first forge a few months ago after alot of research and thought put into the design and already there are things I would do to improve it... for example, I will probably end up welding a few pieces of angle iron on the front and back doors of the forge so I can put a couple of sliding firebricks on it to adjust the door openings. having a place to rest your stock while it is heating is nice as well. Good luck and happy forging __________________ Brad www.andersonknives.ca Available knives http://andersonknives.ca/Available%20Knives.html |

Cool Kim, looks like that forge will work fine. I'm glad to hear its working well for you. Thats quite a dragon you've made! I noticed you are using the forge indoors, I just want to make sure you know that propane forges are carbon monoxide factories and you should always have good ventilation when using it.

Ray,
I thought id post an update on the project. I got a small piece of stainless tubing, and inserted it all the way into the forge...about an inch. I really could not adjust the burners much more at an angle, but they did move some. Anyway, after the forge has been running about 15 mins, i measure 2100 degrees on the pyrometer. I believe the manufacturer said it can have a variance of + or - 5%. Its getting pretty darn hot in there and having the thermocouple all the way in the forge gives me what i think is a pretty accurate reading.....versus the solid end of the tube which was reading 1200 degrees. Thanks for all your help and when i finish mounting the pyrometer, ill post a final picture. I should have already done that, but i remembered what my first love is, and went back to forging some new blades. Thanks for the update, Robert. It sounds like your forge will be just fine.
I'm not sure why you get such a widely varied reading with the closed end on the thermowell though, unless maybe you aren't allowing enough time for it to heat up completely. Look at it this way: the well is a piece of steel inside the forge, just like you blade. If you put the thermocouple against the end of the well and measure the temperature, you are measuring the temperature of a piece of steel in the forge and not the temperature of the hot gasses. Of course, these two temperatures should be pretty much the same if sufficient soak time is allowed. Anyway, you're forging, and that's the important part.... |
