Newbie here
Does anyone know of any knifemaking instructional classes offered in GA? I'm getting the bug and want to get started right.
Thanks! |

You need to be more specific in your request.
What kind of knifemaking are you interested in learning? Where are you located? How far do you wish to travel? It would help us better help you if you filled out your profile. If you're not sure on any of the above, attend one of our guild meetings (see thread below) meet some great guys that can do just about anything you imagine with steel and see what appeals to you the most. Plus you will be able to get some great up front guidance on how and where to get started. There are several makers in the Guild that give instruction in several disciplines. To name a few: Harry and Charlie Mathews, Statesboro, take on the occasional student. Wayne Hensley, Conyers, teaches folders and some forms of embellishment. Dean Gates, near Augusta(?), teaches stock removal with a leaning toward the oriental flare. Dennis Bradley, Blairsville teaches several techniques of embellishment. Mike Wilson, Warne NC, takes on the occasional student. James Mitchell, Columbus, teaches Scrimshaw. Sandy Morrissey, Blairsville, will gladly show you the ins and outs of quality leather work. I teach beginning and advanced bladesmithing, sheathmaking, carving, etc. as well. If I omitted anyone it was not by intent, so chime in. All these fellas and others in the Guild are seriously gifted craftsmen that can and will teach you a lot, if you are serious about learning. Your success will depend totally on you and what you put into your efforts. I'm sure we can find someone that can help you if you give more specifics. In addition to that....if you are not timid around fire and hammers, come up to Trackrock in March (see other thread below) and I'll see about getting you lit up. Not to offend, but just to square things up a bit GT may rule, but the Big Dawgs won. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H Last edited by Crex; 01-22-2010 at 10:05 PM. |

Thanks for the info, fellers. I live in Fayetteville, but work in Mayretta.
Crex, I could use some of that beginning bladesmith learning. What kind of deal are we talking? And don't slam my alma mater too bad. I'm still in mourning. |

Not slamming, just stating a fact-o-life. Win some - lose some. Just finished two full days of bladesmithing instruction, one of the fellas today is a recent Tech grad. pm - headed your way. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
