Stumped -

I have been wracking my brain for a while and haven't been able to come up with a solution so I figured it was time to turn to the vast body of knowledge on this forum. (Is that thick enough?)
WHat I am trying to do is attach 3 pieces of 1/4" X 1/2" X3/32 mother of pearl side by side to a piece of .05 titanium, they can't be pinned and there are no bolsters or end pieces to hold them. They need to look like they are simply stuck there. I figure epoxy alone won't hold them, especially not the knocking they will get in a pocket. I know there has to be a way but as I said I am stumped.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Steve

Others will have better answers I'm sure, but could you install hidden pins under the scales to help the epoxy hold?

That might work if it were a different material or if they were thicker. With only 3/32 to work with I don't think you could get enough of a divot inthe backside to create the hidden pin.
I will need to think on that one.

Loctite 324 2 part adhesive will work. You will never get it back off with out destroying the stuff. See the glue wars thread.

Along with the locktite you can drill tiny holes in the back of the MOP also drill small holes in the Titanium this almost makes them one piece.

I would take a small cut off wheel for a dremel and cut little angled cuts into the underside of the pearl, just barely in but enough to have an angle cut, then do the same to the TI. Epoxy or other adhesive should hold well that way and the cuts kinda act as pins.

Shallow blind tapped bore? Screw into the pearl?

A slot on the side to grab a thinned screw head? One screw grips two scales.

Drill a cross bore and then drill from the bottom into the bore near each side. Use wire to cinch it.

I like the glue idea....

I like the glue idea as well but am concerned that the flex in the .05 titanium would pop off the MOP pieces. I neglected to say that there would be nothing behind the titanium and each piece of ti would be approx 6" long. How much would a piece of 6" ti flex under normal usage?
Does anyone know of a source of the loctite 232 ?
Thanks for all the input.
Steve

I did have a thought about building some sort of cradle for the MOP with clawed corners and then I could screw the cradle to the ti and use the claws to hold the MOP. Unfortunately I have no idea what to make the cradle out of nor how to make the cradle.

www.mcmaster.com do a search for 'loctite speedbonder'
the 324 or 325 will work. you have to buy the activator also. I tested the 324, it is unbelieveable adhesive. .05 Ti is not easy to bend when it is in a small piece. I wouldn't think flex would be an issue.

Hi, Steve. I have a pocket knife on my web site I made that way. It has a thin sheet of sterling silver screwed to the liners with the pearl covering the screws. You fabricate the framework with sterling, screw it to the scales, and then attach the pearl.

This is called "channel inlay".

Look for the linerlock that has an inlayed shamrock in the handle.

Are you enrolled in the slipjoint class?

I have done a few of the things mentioned that worked great. Like Bob said....make then cuts in the back of the scales and on the liners for extra grab then like Tracy said Use the Loctite. I put mine to a pretty good test and they arent coming off. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks everyone.
Tracey,I will try and find some of the Loctite here in Canada first then if necessary go elsewhere.
Don
Where do you get the sterling? That sounds and looks like what I was thinking of.
I am going to enroll in the liner lock course. Would the framelock course be better?
I am cotinually being asked if I make folders so I figure I better learn how. I figured the linerlocks would be the most popular so thought I would start there.

Thanks Again
Steve

Google Rio Grande jewelers Supply, Steve.

If you want to do that, I can give you more details before you start. You must silver solder a silver frame made on the silver sheet. this is screwed to the liner before installing the MOP. After it's all in place you finish the profile to match the liner.

That little red headed woman's folder has sterling silver bolsters too. I guess I should have had them engraved.

Steve, a framelock is the same as a linerlock without furniture. Either class will teach you what you need. You know how to attach bolsters and scales.
