Question Newbie smithing tools?

I have received a gift debit card for christmas. Good for anywhere they take debit or credit. Got the forge up and running but only have a few locking wrenches and one pair of tongs (hinge is on the back end and the grip parts are about quarter to nickel sized and flat.) Have a cross pein and ball pein hammer and a round punch hammer. I have about 68 bucks to spend. What would you all recommend for someone just getting into forging? Wolf jaw tongs? (35 or so), Spring fuller from Kayne and sons 34 or so. Any help appreciated. Also very interested in the tomahawk drift. Love em

Was doing a lot of this prior to christmas Praying for goodies. Got new files, shop heater and a little air compressor (felt guilty about "borrowing" my dad's )

What are you using for an anvil? If you don't have that yet then I'd use the money to buy the biggest hunk of steel (not cast iron) that I could get for the money.

got one already

I have a 150# vulcan (free ) and I have a railroad track anvil as well. Both mounted on huge rectangular sections of doug fir (mill slag) about 19x21 inches, 26 and 31 inches tall. Very heavy. Going to move them indoors sometime soon. Just have to figure out the layout in the garage. Daniel

Ok, you're set on an anvil for the moment then, I'd probably say get some tongs for round stock then.

Something that you might consider is to make what tools you can such as tongs and spend the money on pieces that you don't have the equipment to make your self. You'll find if you make the pieces that they will probably match your needs better than what you buy off the shelf.

You can make tongs, spring fullers, etc yourself and gain the experience. A tomahawk drift is about 25.00 and is necessary to make the tapered drift in the classic trade ax or tomahawk. I would save the money and get practice making tongs and welding.
