Knife show's coming to town, ethics etc

Folx,

I plan on attending a knife show here in NYC in Feb 06 (was dumb nuff to miss one in
Nov).

Was wondering if:

- makers are open to discussing technology aspects of their knifes - as in how do you do that, where do you get this ?

- can I bring a photo camera ?

- would they mind if I were to examine some, most beautiful designs, with me 8x loupe ?

I am not a collector, just a knife-making hobbyist

1) Most makers are happy to discuss their craft, a few jealously guard their 'secrets'. Nothing wrong with asking a technical question.

2) Cameras are OK, but ASK before taking a picture of a maker or his knives. The only time I have had a maker say no was in relation to a prototype that was going to be heading into production. He had no problem with me shooting the rest of the knives on his table.

3) I personally would not examine a knife with a loupe. If a cosmetic flaw cannot be seen with the naked (or bespectacled) eye, then in my view, it doesn't exist.

Just my opinions.

Roger

PArt of the reason for going to knife shows, and one of the more pleasant aspects, is the opportunity to discuss knives, how to , why, where etc. and I have yet to meet a maker who doesn't enjoy helping out a newbie (one of the few times we actually might be able to help another maker). That being said, be aware of potential customers, and get out of the way. Talking shop is great bt doesn't pay the hotel bill.
BTW where is the show you are going to.
Steve

The show is :

NEW YORK, NY. FEB. 24, 25, 26, 2006 EAST COAST CUSTOM KNIFE SHOW. Crowne Plaza Times Square. Opens 1pm Friday, 10 am Saturday and Sunday

The loupe question was not related to me looking for flaws, but to better
see crimshaw/engraving artwork in the fancier designs.

Great advice on getting outta way of a prospective customer !

And of course, I'd ask for permission if I want to take a picture of a knife

I've been to shows where everyone was different. Some saw me as a "browser" and didnt even acknowledge me, and some makers sat there and talked my ear off, answered all my questions and let me handle everything on his table. Encouraged me to do so. I read in Ed Fowlers book that time spent talking to a newbie at a show about knives is worth more than any kind of money from a big spending customer.

I guess just be aware of everything, use good judgement, and have respect. Everyone is different.

It's all in the presentation

I think the tone of your conversations will be very positive and productive if you mention early on that you are a new maker, and are enjoying the engineering and skills that knives have to offer.

At that point he will stop selling you on some aspects, and will probably point out things that a collector wouldn't be as interested in.

Step aside for any prospective client and you BOTH will enjoy a long-remembered dialog.

See you there!

Coop
