410 Stainless Steel?
Anyone know if 410 stainless steel can be used for things like bolsters and guards?
I've been using 416 SS but it's not readily available plus it's pretty pricey. The 410 SS on the other hand is pretty common and affordable.

416 is my preference but 410 works well enough for guards and bolsters...

Thanks Ray. Pros and cons to 410 as opposed to 416? Is it harder to work with? Softer? Does it shine up as nicely? Sorry, I know virtually nothing about 410.

How bout a 308, 309 or a 316 stainless? I use a lot of it at work and there's always plenty of scraps laying around. Would any of these work?

416 looks more like stainless that we use in blades and machines the same. 410 is close but won't harden as much if you want to use it for a spring (as in a liner lock). The 300 series steels are much gummier when machining and have a different finished appearance, doesn't look like stainless blade material and won't harden at all. Still, plenty of guys use 300 series for furniture on their knives ...

I wanted to use the 300 series as either bolsters or a guard. I can get pin material that'd match it. I just wasn't sure why I never saw ppl use it. I can get it for free so I guess I'll give it a try next time. Have to do some dumpster diving tomorrow!

If you can find 303, you've be much happier than trying to use 304, 316, 327, etc

I use 316 for most furniture. I find it machines well, but yes, it seems a bit more grey than 416 or stainless blade material.

Hmm... I've tried 303 and 304 and don't really care for it. Think I'll stick with 416. Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
