HT 416 stainless pins

Hi All
I have just been reading up on the Ray?s method of fitting a handle to a stub tang as I have a project that will require this style of handle fit up.
The question I have is what is the process for HT 416 stainless pins I have limited tooling and send out my knives for HT
Also could I also use this method to HT a liner lock spring on a folder I did a while back(my first) which is now getting a bit week.

Cheers for any help
Lee

Hi Lee,

This was recommended by an old machinist friend for 416 SS.

Hardening: Heat to 1000?C (1830?F) and oil quench.
Tempering: 400?C (750?F) for two hours.
Rockwell: 35 or so

It is also important to note that 416 doesn't have full corrosion resistance until it has been heat treated.

Good luck!

Dan

For the 416 pins (not for springs) I HT the pinstock exactly the same as 440C - 1850F for 20 minutes and then air cool. Since 416 does not harden to the same degree as 440C I use it at full hardness (no temper at all). Even at full hardness 416 is not brittle .....

Thanks Gent's

And interesting info on the corrosion resistance Dan of un-heat treated 416 .
So would makers HT guards when used for this application?

No stainless steel has full corrosion resistance until it has bee HTed. Even so, stainless guards and butt caps are usually not HTed since the difference in corrosion resistance in a low iron alloy like 416 is not large...

Hi Lee,
Although it's a pain to work with, I use 304 for bolsters so I don't have to heat treat it.

The American Iron and Steel Institute has a good read on stainless steel.
Referencing:
http://www.nickelinstitute.org/~/Med...ning_9011_.pdf

Quote:
"For example, Type S17700 has a machinability rating of 45, in comparison to Type 416 stainless steel at 100 percent. The corrosion resistance of these steels in the hardened condition is about equal to that of Type 304."

I suspect a lot of makers are unaware of this and put 416 into service in its annealed state.
