Ironwood Recurve Hunter

Every now and then I find that I need to make a knife that does not take-down. The assembly is still 95% the same, I just make a slight alteration with the pommel nut on the interior. There is an internal sleeve on the non-take-downs, and alignment pins like all the others. By far the strongest assembly I can imagine. Full mechanical connection that incorporates the tang, guard and handle material into one solid unit, all pulled forward into the guard shoulders.
(Personally, and don't hold this against me, but I just don't like compromising handle material laterally with pins and bolts. I also find them visually detracting from the handle material.)
I forged this down from heavy 5160 bar, gave it a differential heat treatment.
I really liked this Ironwood material for its drastic contrast! Lots of light brown and almost black.
Stainless steel contoured guard.
5 1/8" blade with a 4 7/8" handle.
Overall length of 10 inches.
I had hoped to finish this last night for my last knife of 2007, but it ended up being the first of 2008!
Thanks for letting me participate.

Excellent, Karl. Great handle shape with the palm and finger swells. Very serious belly on the blade. You did pick a fine piece of ironwood. Might be a bit large for rabbits and squirrels, but I bet it would be a heck of a camp knife!

I don't hold your ideas about handles and pins against you. As a matter of fact in general I agree. There are times when pins are okay, but most of the time I prefer none, or occasionally just one if there is no pommel or finial. If the tang is designed well it makes a strong and balanced knife, and personally I like the way it looks. This is why I so rarely make a full tang knife.

Not a bad picture either.

David

Very nice as usual Karl. You know I'm a a fan of your takedowns, but I must say I do like this one quite a bit. The blade shape makes it look like a real workhorse and that piece of ironwood is beautiful. It looks like the flat facets on the handle are a little less pronounced on this one - is that by design or just trick photography?

They're there, it's just a little less pronounced. You are mostly correct.
I also had too much light coming in through my window! Sort of softened everything.
I'll make publicly known right now - as I have before - that I just hate broomstick handles. I guess they're all nice and smooth and all, but they show little character and almost no crreativity.
When you add some extra 3D to the handle, not only does it demonstrate some ability to control symmetry, but it adds to GRIP!! It just feels better in the hand.
This one still has some good flats on the top and around the butt, but it's fairly oval in overall shape.
Good eye!
