Wood scales
I found this gentleman on ebay and have been talking back and forth with him about scales. He has over 50 species of woods both domestic and imported. Very nice guy. Most woods average $1.50-2.00, Burl, spalt around $3.00 per bookmatched set. All dry free of checks and inclusions. He does not have a web site yet, but you can email him. NJ is his name and his email is njm1@chartertn.net. He can send you pictures of the species you are interested in. Paul |

Making Your own Wood scales
Can some one tell me how a "bookmatched set" of scales is cut? You see I have a Shopsmith and a very large scape pile of exotic woods. So making my own scales is how I'm planning on going. Scott B. Re: Making Your own Wood scales
bookmatched sawing is accomplished by making a saw cut and lay open the resulting pieces like the pages of a book. In highly figured woods, this produces two pieces which, when laid side by side, are nearly mirror images of each other. Placing these cut surfaces on the outide of the scales on a knife handle provides a "matched set" that is as close as you can get with natural materials. |
