Wtb: Used small elect. Furnace/kiln
WTB: I am looking for a small used electric knife blade furnace/kiln.
I would consider a decent used unit of almost any brand, even if it might be in need of repair.....as long as it priced accordingly. It can be 110v or 220v as long as it is not too large. If it doesn't have a PID controller I will have to retrofit one, I'm a pretty handy guy with much experience in my 60 years. I am willing to pay a reasonable fair price based on the condition and age of the unit and what options/controls it may have. Thank you, DAVID |

If I end up not receiving any bites on this, I may have to build my own.
I have the capabilities but not the time, it's just something I was hoping I wouldn't have to do. I have found some meager plans online and unless I find some better more complete plans I will have to design my own. Any suggestions on plans?.....maybe I should post that question in a different sub-forum. It's really not terribly complicated to build one but will take some thoroughness in design. I would probably be getting some of my specialty items (PID, element wire, etc.) from Auberins.com and Ebay. I even think I can get some soft fire bricks from my nephew. Time will tell on all this...... I would still prefer to purchase a decent used kiln or a repairable/modifiable one without spending an arm and a leg! |

Have you looked on ebay. There are usually a fair number of small glass kilns or mini kilns on there.

When I do find one that's the right size/type they want way too much. I even looked into ceramics ovens/kilns and they are either too expensive, too large or not front loading and no PID and would need way too much modification. I would be better off IMO just making my own and it would cost much, much less.......but will still be time consuming and time is something I am short on along with money! I'll probably end up having to make my own unless something shows up either here or elsewhere. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. |

USA knife maker has one for just over $700. They have what you would need to build one too. Ed

Thanks, Ed......I will look at USA Knife Maker for components.
I won't spend $700 on a used kiln, I can build one for much, much less. It will take some time and effort which I opted to do rather than spend that kind of money on a used one. On one of my other recent threads I mentioned that I was able to get some nice free firebricks and a really nice used controller free from my nephew (if it works). DAVID |

Thanks Ed, but I can build one for very little.....approx. $200 or less due to all the free stuff I obtained from my nephew. There really isn't much to them as far as components, it would (will) be work and time for me though. I didn't look at the new one you referenced yet, but it's possible it may have too small of a chamber size. I will need a chamber length of 10-14". I don't really want the 8" long jewelry kiln chamber, it's just too small and a hassle to put a knife at an angle and still too expensive for what it is.
I just don't have $700 bucks to throw at a tiny knife kiln.....new or used. I am of the belief that they charge way, way too much for little kilns in the first place. I also believe that a used one should be in the range of 40-50% of a new one......still too much for me to spend since new ones with 14" chambers are approx. $1300. |

I built my own
I built my own knife furnace... It works semi well considering how cheap it was. I basically mixed plaster of paris with sand and poured it into a metal cylinder, using a smaller pipe in the middle to form the chamber. There's some good how to's on YouTube if you just look...
Best of luck! |
