Is ATS-34 Magnetic?

I've got a bar of ATS-34 I bought and accidentally discovered it was magnetic. But I thought stainless steel was not magnetic. Do I have something else here? Thanks in advance.

Depends on what % of chromium and nickel. The more nickel the less mag it will be!

Any of the usual stainless blade steels, including ATS-34, have enough iron in them to attract a magnet. However, you cannot get a proper heat treatment on any stainless blade steel by using a forge and a magnet.....

Thanks Austin and Ray. Ray I plan on sending any stainless blades out for heat treat. This ATS-34 was the first piece of steel I ever bought and have since been only forging carbon blades, mainly 5160. I might try making some blades of ATS-34 in the future, and send out for HT, but I like being able to forge and do my own HT in my shop. Makes it much easier for me. Thanks again.

Stainless alloys often used for guards and such may be what you were thinking about:
300 series stainless (like 303 & 304) is austenitic and is non-magnetic
400 series stainless is(like 416 or 410) martensitic and is magnetic

ATS-34 is magnetic.

Are all of the non magnetic stainless steels in the 300 series? My uncle gave me a dairy tank measuring stick that is a nice size for guards and its non magnetic.

I don't know is ALL non-magnetic stainless is 300 series but most likely your measuring stick is since the stainless used for the food industry is pretty much exclusively 300 series. Anyway, whatever it is that you have can be used as a guard. One thing to know is that 300 series steel is often described as 'gummy' when you try to drill or grind on it. Not bad, just not as nice to work with as some steels and it won't polish to quite the same appearance as 400 series ...
