Work in progress: My first folder....

Well, here it is....so far...I put it together and quickly did a finish on the scales. This will eventually have filework and more thinning on the scales.

It is flat ground, Thunderforged damascus
Desert ironwood scales
3/16" pivot
Ti liner lock
Damascus spine

I worked from Ray Rogers' liner lock tutorial....great stuff!

Looks good. Went for one piece scales since this was a prototype. Liners are titanium, look like swiss cheese under the scales from all the screw-ups. Overall, I loved making this. I will certainly be making more in the future...

I lucked ot after having cute the lock prior to HT, but I did not have much scale, and fit was not affected. This one locks up solid as a rock, and overall I am happy. Its awful smooth, and i can set it to flick open at the wrist without blade play. Ill be sculpting the thumbstud and carrying it as my EDC while moving on to my next folder.....

I had a great first tapping experience, no problems *knock on wood*
This one is kinda thin and sloping. I might even thin the whole length a bit.

Lemmie know what you think!

Nice job Dave. Sweet piece of work for your first folder. You've come a long way in a short time. Keep up the good work. Now you need to incorporate that piece of cable damascus you made into your next folder.

Bill

Nice one! Love the wood.
Don't sell it...you should always keep your first folder.

If the action is as good as it looks (and I'll bet it is), then that's a very knife knife indeed!

Thanks, everyone!

This one will certainly not be sold. I intend to abuse it to its fullest possibility....

I will surely be doing more folders in the future. I really did enjoy making this first one.

As for the cable damascus billet, it is going to be used on the Nov 15th KITH. I hope to use some scrap as backspacer material, though.

This knife will most likely see more tranformations as I add bolsters etc....so stay tuned!

Good job. There is no mistaking your style, even in a folder.

So far things to change/remember for my next one are:

Screws: Only sink until head will be even with scale surface
Pivot: Use different type
Liners: Drill holes when needed, rather than at beginning (you should see the liners!)
Backspacer: Use flathead, countersunk screws to avoid havng to countersink heads into scales.
Scales: Next folder will be fully dressed with mosaic bolsters

Just curious what type of pivot you used?

Nice work, and if I may suggest, don't put bolsters on this one, ever. The wood is much to nice and it just kinda flows along with the blade. Again, nice work!

Trenton

I used a 3/16" step pivot. It was a bit awkward to use due to it being deisnged to be accessed through the scales, rather than recessed., and I'll be trying a more standard barrel pivot or one of the press fit pivots on the next one.

No bolsters? I think it looks awkward with only two screws....maybe ill just add a third?
