Boatbuilder; check out "Sharky" from a knifemaker named cote guillaume....he stabilized a spruce pinecone, then slabbed a large fillet knife w/ it. Looks just like fishscales. Maybe you were thinking of that Knife. http://www.custommade.com/by/CoteKnives/

Nope that's not the one. It was something about taking different coloured materials and stacking them up and cutting them into fish scale type patterns. Then rearranging the pieces and gluing back together.
