Andy,
Starting next month, my tattoo schedule is one less day per week (permanently). I started booking this way five months ago in anticipation of making more knives come spring. I also have a few PTO days set aside just for knives this month, so... ...hopefully I'll be more productive this year. Plus, I'm still trying to finish my 'super-secret' project. shhh! __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

Day 1 Not a complete loss
So I read I thought before that we were supposed to post as we went .. well for better or worse here is day 1 which was nice enough to give plenty of work I think to days 2 - 30
As always please feel free to rip into it. The initial brain burner.. funny looked better in my head. I liked the rounded bolsters I belive Im going to use some nickle. I know I need to bring the grind line up on it a bit. The initial cutout and fingergrove and the loss of day light. Havnt convinced the wife to let me bring the grinders and sanders in the house.....Yet ? Well thanks for looking and sure would like some feedback. For every failure, man will learn another truth James Last edited by lpspurgeon; 01-10-2009 at 11:22 AM. Reason: Resizing Images |

Hey ....I got started today too.
Some lucky person is going to get one of these knives. These will be the first time trying bolsters so we will see how it works out. If it arrives with out bolsters then it didnt work out. The one knife is a blatant copy of one of Tracy Mickleys that I think is cool.I wont do it justice but I will attempt to make a usable knife. __________________ Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. I ran into a hurdle over the last couple of days. I tried annealing some 1080. It turned out that my vermiculite had absorbed some water, so the anneal didn't happen. I'm guessing at best it normalized, but it's still hard enough to tear up drill bits and will likely tear up belts. It files okay though. I can drill about a third of the way through the 1/8 inch bar before my drill bits get eaten up. They're aren't the greatest bits, but I'd had no problems with them going through 1095 CRA from Admiral. I may have to go at it with the angle grinder to at least form the tang (I'm wanting to do a hidden, mortised tang.)
That, and my last firebrick got some major cracks this time. I'll wire it back together, but it looks like I'll finally have to get that mini-forge together for this one. |

Well here's where I'm at.
I profiled 5 blades, figuring it would help my odds of making a decent knife. Steel is 3/16 1095. 2 of the knives are duplicates. Right now I'm figuring wood or Micarta with no bolsters, though I may add them to the bottom knife. I may try for a hamon, bot haven't done it before (and why its nice to have duplicates) And tips on creating a hamon or feedback on the profiles is more than welcome!
