neck knife

Well, I'm almost done with it now. I changed my mind twice with regards to what I wanted. I started with a hammer textured finish, but it just didn't look right with the handle style. I ended up taking off the plunge cuts as well for a total smooth finish. I couldn't resist doing a little claycoated Japanese style quench on it. I really liked the "hamon" on this one. For only a ~2" blade, there's quite a bit of activity. The blade is W1, handle is rosewood. Overall length ~5 1/4". It still needs a bit of cleanup around the wood. Next up will be the sheath/scabbard made from the matching rosewood.

Don:
It looks great!
Does the wood go completly thru the handle? or are they scales?

Cant wait to see the finished product!

God Bless

Mike

Thanks. I wasn't sure what I could do on a 2" blade with regards to hamons. I've been experimenbting a lot on W1, 1095 and 1050 for my tantos...but you never know exactly what you'll get until you've done it!

Yes, the wood goes through the handle. The spine on this blade is about 3/16" tapering towards the belly. Slotting the handle took most of the weight away and made for a nice light design. The rear isn't hardened, so it should be plenty tough. The wood was pressed in along with a touch of epoxy. After soaking in linseed oil, it swells a hair which makes it "at one" with the blade. I sand it flush, soak in oil, cure, then buff. The wood is raised about 1/8" from the steel surface. In theory, the sheath will be slotted to make nice snug fit with the handle.

I'm glad I decided to join the KITH this time. I'm really having fun with this one. I've already had several friends and relatives hinting that a necker would be nice to have. (Now if I only had another month before Christmas....) I think I'll definitely be making more.
