Belts

What do you like best. I am currently testing zirconia, ceramic, and gators.

Ray, I see your active. Whadaya think?

Plus, does anyone know where I can get all the grits in any of these types and not just a couple? I use 2" x 48".

www.trugrit.com will set you up! They carry 'em all. I just got some Gators, and so far they run circles around the straight zirconia and ceramics I have.

I don't have near the grinder time most folks have though, so hopefully we'll get a bunch of more edumacated opinions!

I like Norton Hoggers (ceramic) in 60 grit for bulk stock removal and zirconia in 120 - 400 for finer grinding. A lot of your choice will depend on exactly how you like to work so what I like (or anyone else likes) might not be the best choice for you.

As for Gators, I have had them in 80 through about 400 grit and I like them for what they were designed to do. They weer designed for finish work, even the 80 grit, and are very poor at stock removal. That's not just my opinion, it is also the opinion of the factory that makes them. Their brochure is very specific that the belts are designed for finish work. They will remove metal but not very much or very fast. I use the 400 grit (A45 I think) quite a bit for finish work. They last much longer than any other fine grit belt and can be used at higher speeds. Still, the finish is different from a 400 grit zirconia belt so I also buy those. Tru-Grit is the most complete source I know of for all these belts...

Thanks guys. This is actually what I expected to hear. However, Trugrit only lists a few grits in these types of belts in 2 x 48.

I've ordered online from them before. I guess I should call to see if their selection goes beyond what is listed on the site.

Thanks again!

I have a 25 year old Burr King 2x48. Tru-Grit stocks 3M micron belts for me because I couldn't get them from anyone else. Koval stopped carrying them.

I get 2x48 and 2x 72" both from Tru-Grit.
