They are made from the legs of your "walker" that you got from the Doctor in 1836.

Maybe farm implements ?????? Whatever they are, they sure look good.

Yo Pal,

Ok, I'll guess:

Metorite......is about the oldest I can think of
Anchor Chain
Wagon Wheel Rim
Two Man Crosscut Saw (as Don Carlos has already said)

UNLESS, you are making your crucible steel or wootz.

I don't know what these are forged from, But I do want to see them when finished!!

Tony

Mike, Your right about it being the shear steel. Most likely you remember the blades I did out of my first shear steel find. What makes this funny is I had bought at least a half dozen old lumbermill circular saw blades about 3 years ago. Tested them in hopes that one would turn out to be shear steel but I must have screwed up or didn't try the one blade that was shear steel. For some reason a couple weeks ago I got interested in the old blades again and was nicely surprized to see that pattern again.

Ray, from what the upper part of the blade looks like, i would directly say that it perfectly looks like an etched ledeburitic steel. Something like D2. But what's odd and normally unusual for such a steel is the temper line and the fact that the motives are invisible on the hardened part.
My guess would not be a shear steel, who looks like a very fine damascus or even a bit like wootz, but an old style very high ledeburitic carbon steel which has been cast into very large recipients (slow cooling).
How old are these saw blades?

Achim

This is just a pure guess but I'd say the saw blade is not more than a hundred years old if that. The reason I'm calling it shear steel is that is what Wayne Goddard says it is. There's a picture of the same steel in his "Wonder of Knifemaking" book. Besides Wayne being a bladesmith he worked for a number of years in a saw shop. What I need to do is send you a piece of it and a piece of the older steel from the first time and get it anilized or maybe just do it here so it doesn't get misplaced. Its nothing like any D-2 I have worked. D-2 is a pain in the ass as far as concerned.

Is your old email adress still working? I'll give it a try so you can tell me where to send the steel.
