New guy file work
Im just getting started building knives so today I thought I'd try some file work on a piece of aluminum, i know it's not perfect but it's my first try, what I can see with filing aluminum is its easy to mess up pretty quickly I'm sure with steel it will come out looking a little more crisp.
Anyway give me some constructive criticism. Anything y'all can tell me to do to better myself is appreciated. Thanks |

I'm not even close to being a pro or even really experienced but other than a few uneven spots, it looks great!

Very nice Kev!
Round out those squared corners for fun... you can get a little more "flow" out of that pattern. Like this.... very similar pattern to yours when I started __________________ Stay away from fast women and slow horses |

I don't recall my spacing on that one but it will vary depending on your pattern design, file diameter(s), and thickness of the blade. I always experiment with new patterns, file diameters, etc on scrap steel... like you are doing. Best to experiment with spacing based on that criteria. It helps me a lot to scribe a center line on the steel before I do anything. That reference is crucial throughout the process if you want it all to be relatively uniform.
Here's what meant by "rounding the squared corners". I photoshopped some of them in your pic to illustrate roughly what it would look like. __________________ Stay away from fast women and slow horses |

I'm definitely not a pro but been experimenting with it a bit.

Lookin good man keep up the good work! After you get that down pat try out the double thorn vine. It's a bit trickier but looks really nice too. How thick was the aluminum?

After you get comfortable with a pattern try it out on a thinner piece of metal. It will help you refine your skills a lot. File work is one of my favorite parts of knife making.

I'm thinking I need to space my thorn a little farther from the 1/2 moon cut? Especially on the left side.
