Wink First mini

My wife was admiring the necklace knifes worn by some of the ladies at Winston-Salem last weekend . I thought I'd try my hand at one. d2, corian handle, oal 3.75", blade 2"
I may be getting a "knife wife"; who knows?

Thanks guys for the look,

john costa

John,

Nice job. That certainly is a high polish on that blade.

Does the Corian handle mean she can only use it in the kitchen!

Nice Job!

I remember a few years back when mini's were all the rage. You couldn't go to a knife show without seeing tables and tables of mini's. It's nice to see knife makers turn out a mini from time to time. I would not want to see any style come to dominate the knife market (read "fad"). But mini's are a good test of a knife makers skill. Which you have shown in this knife.

Talking Heat Treatment on D2 please...

Dear Mr John Costa

I just saw your nice mini piece and I should say that working on D2 is my other choice than O1 because here in Jakarta, Indonesia, I just find O1 and D2 as mill bar.
I need your help on heat trating D2 since I don't have oven, just a charcoal forge. Would you help me on this please....
THX a lot. God Bless You.

The d-2 that I use is already hardened. The steel is from blades off a plainer used to smooth lumber in a saw mill. If you keep them cool while grinding there is no need to re- heat treat them. You can get some info on this steel at International Knife and Saw Inc. Just do a search and you should find it with no problems. Good to hear from you. Let me know if I can be of any more help. God with you.

hard grinding D2

Greetings,

I note you said you grind D-2 fully hardened. The last time I tried to even do the finish on heat treated D-2 I almost gave up. I'm amazed at your persistence. Love that fantastic finish.

Cheers.
