Tightening a sheath?
I had a customer ask me if it was possible to tighten up the fit on a pouch-style sheath in which the knife fits too loosely. I wasn't able to think of anything. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks! |

Gentle heat tends to shrink leather. You didn't say the sheath is leather so that is an assumption on my part. Try putting it in an oven at the lowest setting checking it every 15 or 20 minutes so you don't overheat it. If you overheat the sheath it will be ruined. Been there, done that. While the sheath is hot, it can be stretched.

One very simple fix for a loose pouch style sheath is to punch a number 7 hole just inside the stitching, through the welt at the junction of the mouth of the sheath and the edge of the sheath. Insert a chicago screw and tighten it up and test. The screw can be adjusted to the best tightness or fit and then remove and reset at that point using white Elmer's glue to lock the screw in place.

Thanks Paul. The Chicago Screw is so simple a concept (hope I can remember that one). I saw some somewhere that were solid brass with a decorative star on the head and had a blind hole - gotta find that source again. See you and Dad at the Blade.

Crex, it was probably Tandy/Leather Factory, and Weaver has some that look like engraving, which is the type I use.

I have tightened an old sheath up by replacing the welt. Un stitch the sheath, replace the welt with one that has a little more material on the inside, re stitch the sheath and re finish. I have never had a problem with the holes lining up and it has saved some older sheaths.

Thanks Paul, knew I'd seen them somewhere.
I've done that a few times myself, Harry. Just aggravating to have to cut open what is otherwise a good sheath. Sometimes I just make a slightly larger knife to fit the sheath instead. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

I have just started making sheaths and knifes ,I have wet formed the sheath around the knife. Works well and the knife will stay locked in . Soak the sheath with hot water and work the leather with your fingers around the knife, make sure you wrap the knife before hand to keep it dry. Let it sit over night and then remove the knife and let the sheath finish drying. I know this info was posted a few years ago but some people like me read them to see what people have give for a fix to the problem
