Discoloration
Hello
Name is Stoney327 I have a question about finish. I have been using Nickel Silver lately for bolsters, pins, and Pommel caps. Here's my problem. When I buff out the NS it has a Brass look to it ???? Has anyone else ever had this problem, and if so how did you correct it ???? I am assured by my supplier that the material in question is indeed Nickel Silver. I've had this problem with my NS pin stock also from a different supplier. When the pins are buffed they take on a Brass look ??? Thanks for whatever help you can be, please feel free to email me. Oh, I'm a newbie to forums, but have been making knives since 1966. Regards; Stoney327 |

I've never experienced that, but it is always best to use the same alloy for pins as the piece being pinned. Sounds like the pins are of a lower nickel content.

Thanks Skilled
I will look into getting some NS stock and pins from a different supplier. I appreciate the reply.Stoney327 |

Why are you using nickel silver. It scratches way to easy and has that yellowish tinge to it. Switch to 416 stainless. It works quite easily and you can get 416 pin stock just about anywhere you find the steel. Most makers have moved away from nickel silver.

Thanks SVanderkollf
I guess I'm a Dinosaur? I've been using Nickel Silver since I started in 1966. I'm just a purist? Ever since I held my first hunting knife with polished NS Pommel and Bolsters, I was hooked. But I guess it's time to turn loose of the past and look to the future ? I'll have to try your 416 S/S? and see how that works for me? Thank you again: Dave |

Yes it oxidizes differently from freshly polished .It is brass with a little nickel .
416 can be hardened a bit and some like to use it that way .416 is a free machining grade of 410. |

Thank you for your input. I will definitely give it a shot. I'm a Machinist, but don't recall ever hearing about 416 S/S? I've heard of the standards 410, 409, 316L, 440C, but not 416? One of the 17 subjects I substitute teach is Machine Technology. I'll see if I can find any of this 416 S/S in my shop supply room , or ask the regular shop teacher. Thanks again Mete, God bless. regards: Dave |
