Another Recurve in O1 (for myself)

If you saw the last one that I posted; this is modeled after that but for my own taste.

Specs
O1
6.5" blade; 12" OAL
Flat grind
Handles: natural micarta with orange/green liners & TWELVE brass 1/8" pins
Sheath: leather outer with kydex inner; large Tek-Lok

I liked the one that I made for my customer so much that I decided to make one for keeps. Granted, he takes better pictures with his up in Montana. Hope you enjoy!

Regards,
Chris

Looks good. Is that leather as it looks like brown kydex? Like the way you used the grommets and chicago screws. I use rivets and sew mine. Twelve pins is challenging unless you drill them after you glued the scales on. I did 12 pins, but had pre drilled holes and it was a hassle to get them all lined up when I put the scales on. I used a #30 drill for the 1/8 pins as it's .128 and gives me .003 clearance. The knife was D2 and I didn't want to use a carbide drill on it. Those carbides are expensive. The green and gold liners sets it off well.

It's leather indeed. Actually pretty heavy leather (9 oz) wet-formed around a black kydex insert. I go back-packing quite a bit and seem to get rained on more often than not. It's nice to have the kydex liner to at least keep the moisture from building up right there pressed against the O1 blade. The liner can also be removed for cleaning, which I've found useful after field dressing game and getting blood/hair pushed down in the sheath.

I looked through my drill drawer and found 14 1/8" bits and 0 #30's. Having that extra bit of clearance would have been the way to go. I drilled the 12 pin holes prior to HT and clamped/drilled the scales before gluing everything up. I did round/sharpen the end of each brass pin to aid in guiding them through. Got pretty hairy there towards the last pins fighting against the expoxy set-up time! I believe I'll find some more #30 bits before I attempt that again.

I hear you on getting nervous on the epoxy setup time. I use 30 min epoxy as it give me some breathing room. With that many pins no matter how precise you drill the holes there is always a couple that do not want to fit. lol
