Leather question

A client of mine has a large piece of "Italian leather" (cow hide) which he purchased off Ebay. It was quite expensive and is absolutely beautiful. It is an entire side, maybe 8-9 oz, and absolutely perfect. Not a scratch or blemish anywhere. It is rich rusty brown on both sides. Looks like it might be used for high-end briefcases or maybe boots.

He wants me to use it for a sheath when he next commisions me for a knife. How do I tell if it is safe to use? i.e., not acid tanned rather than vegetable tanned. Y'all know where I'm going with this. Don't want to take any chances.

Terry, chrome tanned leather will not accept a sharp tool impression and it will work out what little it does. If in doubt, you can always line it with a thin bark tanned leather, such as calf or kip---suede is doubtful at best. Paul Long lines with deer hide and his sheaths are exceptional. ---Sandy---

Have you heard anything about suede reacting with silver?
I read it in a wood working magazine in a section that was talking about lining boxes. Said to use faux suede as something in the tanning of the suede will react and tarnish silvers.
