Equalizing
In reading the Crucible sheets, I am left without a complete explaination of 'equalizing'.
For 154CM, I think it says to preheat to 1400* and then equalize. ??? Is this a hold time at 1400*? How long? Any help would be great. Thanks! __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

most of those reference sheets are designed for the imaginary 1" thick piece of steel. It would take some time for a furnace to heat the entire thickness of the steel to an even 1400F so you 'equalize' or allow enough time for the entire thickness to reach temp. For a knife, it's so thin it doesn't take any time. I allow 4 minutes and probably don't even need to do that.

One of the reasons is to minimize the time spent at the higher temperatures that will cause grain growth or decarburizatin.

Ok. It's actually ATS-34, but that shouldn't make any difference.
I'll do a couple of minutes at about 1400* just to be sure.
