Remember "Dr. Gene"...? (now banned)
I don't know how many of you have seen the new issue of Blade. In this month's "The knife I carry" feature, there's a photo and story submitted by our somewhat eccentric "old friend", Dr. Gene Neill.
In his usual humble fashion he mentions the "magnificent" handmade knife he carries everyday, and then adds that one of his ways of having fun is to make "museum quality" knives!!!! As I recall he's made maybe 3 or 4 knives in the past 30 years?!?...(something like that). This is the same guy who started out in Newbies some months ago asking if anyone could recommend whether or not he could make a knife with his bench grinder... Too bad Blade doesn't have a way of checking up on the guys who submit these stories. Dennis Greenbaum Yeah Baby! |

Says he's carried at least one knife every day for 68 years. That's impresive. Do you suppose that includes those years he spent in prison too?
Well, why not? They have cable tv, conjugal visits, free room and board, free meals, and they can learn a trade for free all at the taxpayers expense. I guess carrying knives isn't too big a stretch ..... |

I had wondered what happened to him. He was a crotchety old coot. What could one do to get banned? Seems exstreme just for being a fussy old codger. Just goes to show how in la la land I am. Didn't he post a pic of a knife he did on that jet grinder. I remember thinking ," By God he did it!"

Dr. Gene---?
Crochity old coot does not quite cover the antics that Gene was accustomed to in his dealings with CKD forumites. The man was argumentative, overbearing, extremely egotistical, insulting to the point of being obnoxiious. Had you read many of his postings you would not question his being banned not only from this forum but several others as well. Our adminstrator gave this man every opportunity to clean up his act to no avail. Shed no tears for his absence. If his work is good enough to be featured in Blade, then I compliment him. It was not his work that was inferior, it was his attitude. Sandy

Hey Sandy-
Just so there's no misunderstanding... His appearance in Blade has nothing to do with his work. He showed up in "The Knife I Carry" section... He simply claimed to do "Museum Quality" knives...and Blade apparently took him at his word and printed that. There were many of us who offline, tried to help him with his many questions and concerns. I think most of us gave him the benefit of the doubt at first and thought him to be just a harmless, crotchety, old man... and tried hard to look the other way. In every case it came back and bit each one of us in the butt. To say he was abusive is putting it mildly... I'm sorry, but after what he put so many of us through, it just bugged the heck out of me to open up an (otherwise excellent) issue of Blade and see his photo, accompanied by his usual gross exaggerations (read-lies)! oh, no biggie. That section usually has an old farmer that carries an old Case Stockman his boy found in the field in aut 57' that he soaked in a bucket of oil to loosen it up and been carrin it ever since.
Would be a hoot if ol' Gene started gettin orders and the next thing you know he is shakin hands with Jerry on the cover. Sorry Dennis, hate to send ya off to work with that visual. He does seem like the type to fall in a bucket of S#$% and come out smellin like a rose. I read some of his experiences on his site, altho incredable and maybe exagerated, I could relate as I was a troubled youth that had to learn the hard way. I think,or thought that I had argued with him as much as anyone. I felt sorry for him in a way. A man his age who could not listen and learn from others experience. He would ask you a question then call you a liar. For some reason, I would laugh to the point of tears at some of his rants. Other times i would feel sad that he was such a tortured soul. I look at it this way: "There, but for a little thing called sanity, go I" __________________ "Many are chosen, but few are Pict" "The doer alone, learneth" NT Neo-Devo |

What a webpage!!!!
He he he!!! Well, he is the MOST crotchety storyteller I have ever heard of. Each page is jawdropping.
Whatever... Thanks for the chuckles. I'll be first in line for an order for a $5000 'Forever Warrantied' Persian. Who else..? The pity of it all is he WAS quite talented and did some remarkable work in a short period. But how many folks did he singe along his 'Hellbent' course? All of them. Coop |

Hey guys,
Although I certainly had my issues with Gene... He's gone now, and bashing somone when they're not around is unfair. We're only inviting him to try and come back & defend himself. Especially in this case... I say, let bygones be bygones! |

Hi, Jon----If I remember correctly, (and I do) The good doctor had singled you and I to share in his most verbal tirades of abuse. We do not appear to be any the worse for it. so, As you suggest, it is best forgotten! Sandy

Jon-
You're right of course about us taking the high road...that's in the spirit of the CKD. But I gotta say that after the pain that guy caused around here, there was no way I was gonna let that Blade "article" pass without at least pointing it out. Dennis Greenbaum Yeah Baby! |
