enough drill press?
Merry CHRISTmas everybody.
Quick question here- Santa got me a drill press at harbor freight with the following specs-- 1/3 hp, 1/2 chuck capacity, 5-speed, spindle stroke 2", max swing 91/2. Is this enough press for fixed blades now and eventually work on folders or will I have to have more? If you do require more press than that to make knives, which area if any is lacking (hp, max swing, ...). thanks. |

That is enough drill press.
Remember that most of the drilling you will do is through thin material. That press will work fine. The only place you may run into trouble is if you want to do stick tang knives. Drilling through a handle that is 4-4 inches long could be difficult. |

If you do decide to do a stick tang, this little trick I picked up from Bob Engnath might help you. You make a bottom pin for your press and then line up your drill bit so it will meet the point on your bottom pin. Then you mark where you tang will enter the wood and where it will exit. Punch mark those targets and place one on your bottom pin and drop your drill bit on the other and drill. Flip it over and do it again. If they do not go far enough, then you will at least have a guide to sink your drill bit it with you hand drill and take it on through the extra half inch or so.
My drill press is like yours in that it has a two inch spindle stroke. Still it is an awesome tool and I use it for all sorts of things. __________________ Glen |

these small ones are great for general drill work (i have 2 set up with constantly used bits/countersinks so i don't have to change them as often) but
