hting 1095

guys I ordered some 1095 and am going to be making a couple of blades from this and want to do the hting myself, is it better to use oil or brine and if brine do you quench it like you would in oil.

I have read so many variations on how to ht this metal and they are all different.....cornfused.

thanks

If you go it from the New Jersey Steel Baron you will probably be able to harden it in vegetable oil. If it is from another source then you may need to go to a rapid quenching commercial oil or brine. The difference in 1095 is manganese level which will effect the hardenability of the exact allow. You can also cause yourself problems by getting too hot before quenching or in normalization due to the high carbon content. This is why many of us discourage new comers from starting out with 1095. Something like 1080, 1085, or 80CrV2 would be a better more forgiving due to the lower carbon content and, with the 80CrV2, a little vanadium to retard grain growth.
