Galvanized sheet for HT Oven shell?
Hey guys,
I'm in the process of designing a HT Oven, and I was toying with the idea of using some 16 gauge Galv. Sheet metal for the shell. My reasoning is that I can build a box with 40 dollars worth of galv. sheet as opposed to 150 dollars+ worth of stainless. I plan on using 3"x 4.5" soft fire bricks, sealed with refractory mortar, and wrapped with a 1" thick blanket of Ceramic Fiber insulation. Do you think this will keep the outer shell cool enough to remain under the maximum operating temperature of galvinized coating? (I believe it's around 500 to 550 degress Farenheit) Are there better ways of keeping things cool? Are there other options without going stainless? Thanks, -Drew |

How about just plain old carbon steel? It you're worried about it rusting paint it with some high temp paint like automotive header paint.

Hopefully Gene will jump in here but there is a danger if the zinc in the galvinized coating melts. Gene has warned of a dangerous gas from melting.
Try the carbon with engine paint. It will handle the heat. Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |

Goe to your local auto body supply and get sheet body steel you can paint it with woodstove paint and it will hold up well.
