You've got a lot to learn. Hope you will be in the chat tomorrow we'll discuss heat treating for you better. Was the blade tempered at all? The blade should be tempered and sharpened then tested by cutting and different tests. Beating it with a hammer is dangerous and not a good way to test blade. You must of misunderstood someone if they recommended the hammer. Hopefully more experienced members can help you with more info. Hope I don't sound harsh just want to help.

Austin

lol...........no problem fuzzy......I am here to learn! But I am not the fastest human being- car wreck in 91- I know I need to build a forge! Just putting something up so I can get what I am getting- feedback! Can't correct things if I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

Lol, a weed burner, now I've seen it all. You might want to take it out side next time. Heck, you might even get some firebricks and use it to make a forge. As far at the spring, it is most likely 9260, not the best steel for a knife but really tough.

The MAPP gas forge wasn't working for me jm! ...........lol Actually that thing melts glass so it will get steel orange no problem. But I do need a forge as this set up is too big for my old one, fire bricks.... sounds good! 9260 you say? It was marked 5160 on the last set I got but this was from a camaro, last one was a truck so you're probably right. Hey, as I said I'm just learning!

I agree, and I also don't think you got the blade hot enough, that blade needs to hit the quench immediately.

Order some fire bricks or build a forge. It's really easy and well worth it.

I have a magnet stock to my forge and i have my oil set up right below the opening.

Really nice looking forge! Now I feel kinda stupid for even posting that video! Oh well, all part of the learning process I suppose.

It is a learning process. I ruined many a piece of steel and did everything wrong (and still do). Take your failures and learn from them. Overall your blade is pretty good, the handle is a bit big and has a shape that would be uncomfortable. Ok for an art knife (of which heat treating isn't important because it will never be used) but if you intend on using what you make do just that, use them.

Get you some 1084 from Aldo and bring it to non magnetic then quench in oil immediately, then do 2, 1 hour cycles in the oven at 400.

Shoulda' posted some of my other profiles I've done imc. That's why I posted a video, so people could point out what I'm doing wrong. I've never actually heat treated a blade before so I expected this constructive criticism. Believe it or not, the blade is actually pretty comfortable if you position your hand with your thumb on the gimping, but I agree, it is thick for a 6" knife. Thanks for the input!
