Just a note to those that are in or thinking about getting in. This is a real chance to see what others are doing and get to see the knife in-hand. Looking at the Gallery link- jmd61-
Will be going for his ABS Journeyman test in June. Good luck Joe.

It's great to have you Andy! Looks like this might turn out to be a pretty hoppin' KITH.

If you've been making knives long enough that you feel that you've learned all there is to know, and cannot learn anything else, then you are no longer a newbie.

In the past we've opened this up for everyone. In the spirit of things, the true newbies are trying to learn the basics, and this is a chance for them to make a knife and get some feedback. The guys that have participated that have a bit more experience under their belts have used this KITH as an opportunity to try something new. They might be a stock remover that decides to try forging, etc. Maybe they want to try a new style. But, having more experience, they get to offer tips and critiques beyond the "Hey, nice knife!" comments.

So, are you in? You know you wanna. . .

I'd love to get in on this if you'll have me.

As a side note,
I've participated in swaps like this on the net before and haven't had real good luck with getting anything in return. Has everyone followed through in the past? I'm just kinda gun shy after a few of these sort of things.

The only KITH problem we've had here I'm aware of was a knife was held up by customs. But,it was worked out. The list is usually checked and double checked before the final list is made.

Like anything else on the net, you take your chances.

We have been very fortunate here. We have an open honest community. People come to ask questions, and others are very willing to offer answers, advice, or suggestions. This has always been a very civil forum, and as far as I know everyone has behaved honorably. Any squabbles that might have arisen have generally resulted in apologies and no hard feelings.

A KITH here is an exercise in community, in sharing knowledge, and in having fun. Getting a knife by another maker is a bonus.

This isn't the type of thing that you get into to try and get a free knife. If that's the case, then a person will find the welcome mat taken in very quickly. Sometimes you will get a knife that is as good as or better than the knife you send out. Sometimes it will be made by someone with less experience than you, and is an early attempt at the craft. But, it will be someone's best attempt.

There have been problems, but usually none of the participants' faults. We've had knives lost in the mail, some stopped by customs, etc. Sometimes life catches up to us, and we get close to the deadline and find that there's just no way to get the knife done. No biggie, all of us have been there at one time or another. That's why we generally don't draw names until close to the end, when we know definitely who is still in.

To my knowledge, no one has willingly violated the trust of the people here or acted dishonorably in a KITH.

Guys,

After New Years' I will start another thread with the list of participants, and update it as needed. This KITH will still be open for people to join in.

We should probably discuss and come to some agreement on the ground rules.

Deadline--is everyone cool with March 30? This will give everyone about 3 months--plenty of time for us slow guys, and those of you with orders, etc., to finish up. If it gets close to the end of March and a lot of us still aren't done, we can revisit this.

The knife--you guys can let me know what you think, but I think that for this one the knife each person makes should be 100% hand made. In other words, no factory mods or kit knives. Components like mosaic pins, etc., are fine if purchased, but the blade should be forged or ground from barstock by the maker.

Sheath--should sheaths be optional, or do you guys want "the full package?"

Style--some KITH's center around a theme--assassins' camp knives, Nessmuks, bowies, etc. Personally I think those are great, but one of the things I like about the Newbie KITH's is the wide variety of knives that are made. I think this allows the maker to have free reign with the designs they want to pursue. What say you?

I would vote for any style. Sheath optional.
