When to drill?
Hey there,
I'm just about ready to send my first blade in for heat treating. I stating using D2 thinking that I could heat treat it myslelf with a torch. I guess it does pay to do a little research. Anyhow, I need to drill pin holes for the bolster and handle and would like to know if I should drill them before or after heat treating. Would it be the same process for other steels (my next blades will be O1). Thanks for the help. Dave |

You normally do all your drilling before heat treat. once the blade is hardened it is very difficult to drill. How much of the finishing did you do before heat treat? There are some fairly lengthy threads on finishing before heat treat. Hope this helps. I'd guess I'm at about 80% right now. I actually just drilled the pin holes and am putting the finnishing touches on with 320 grit paper. I'm doing this all by hand right now, so it's been a pretty slow process getting rid of the file marks. I'm going to send it to Texas Knifemakers for heat treating tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
