Ultra High Carbon Laminte steel ??
OK folks, this may be the most hair brain scheme Ive thought of yet! But its nagging at me and Im losing sleep! :evil
My goal is to make a laminated chefs blade with a VERY high carbon core sandwiched in a low carbon sheath. Here is what i am thinking. If I take say a 1084 powder and add powdered graphite, which If I understand correctly is pure carbon, would I be able to signifigantly raise the carbon content of the core powder ? I am looking for an extremly hard edge. I understand, I may be asking for trouble with it being to hard and chipping, But this will be a slice and dice knife, not a chopper. My hope is to have the softer sheath almost to the edge to lend its support. 1.) anyone know what % graphite to add? 2.) Should I put a boundry layer (nickle) between the inner and outer layers to inhibit carbon migration, loosing my soft sheath effect? Im open for any suggestions on this, It may be a fools folly, but in my feable mind, I think it may have merit. Please let me know what you think!!
