Plumber's Necker
Sometimes at Trackrock I get to actually forge something....and sometimes I just plays.....
Had intended to weld the knurled adjuster to the end for a lanyard loop, but grandson said to leave it adjustable. His logic - Give you something to play with until the paramedics show up. oh yeah, this was from a 6" Rigid pipe wrench jaw (for those who lack inductive reasoning) __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H Last edited by Crex; 04-11-2019 at 06:40 AM. |

That pretty well defines 'clever' ....

I would agree with Ray, very clever. Sort of makes me want to see what tool I have that could be sacrificed to make a blade from.

There is enough steel in the bottom wrench to make a BIG knife.

Right Wayne, did a very large, hefty meat clever from a 24" that wound up on a BBQ wagon belonging to - easy guess - a retired plumber who does competition cooking. Says it's the most efficient hawg buster he's ever had. They are quite a work out to straighten out and forge down to size.
Can't tell from the pic but the jaw teeth are on the spine of the blade not the cutting edge. All the reduction work pretty much "muddys" them out. Been thinking about a camp axe from a 48" jaw I found. Just been too busy with serious work to hammer down that much mass, Some Day project. As far as tool boxes go, most of my buddies lock their boxes when they see me pull up. I only work with already broken tools (get these for free) and only certain brand names. Really nice steel in the quality brands. Some seem to be A1 steel or very similar, but most give great results when heat treated as 1084. Get same spark patterns, same velvet grain on break, and show same grain patterns when etched. Know that I am not saying it's 108X series steel, just responds well when treated as such. Did a real nice B&T with a 4" blade out of a half section of a large pair of Channel Locks. No doubt as to the source when you looked at the handle. Turned out really tough and gets used every day by a friend of mine who does home improvement work. I made a special sheath that I matched and attached it to his well worn tool pouch. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
