In need of a good steel supplier in South GA

I just joined tonight and well, I'm pretty new to the knife making arena, but luckily my background is in welding and light machining. So I do know the difference between aluminum and stainless! What I really need is some info on steel suppliers in southwest GA. I've already contacted a few in Atlanta - with no 5160, 1095 or tool steels of any sorts............HELP!............lol

You are probably not going to find any. Southern Tool Steel is in Tennessee but I've never done business with them. You can get 1075, 1095, 5160, and 6150 from them if you are intending to forge blades plus A2 if you are going to do stock removal.

I think that a great many of us use The New Jersey Steel Baron. Aldo carries a wide selection of blade steels. Alpha Knife Supply carries a good selection also but they seem to have stock in sizes that will interest stock removal makers more than knifesmiths.

Doug

Which side of S GA are you located? E - C - W
There are several excellent knifemakers across the state down there that can help you with sources and getting a good running start at knifemaking in general. Check out the Georgia Custom Knifemakers' Guild website www.georgiaknifemakersguild.com and further down on these forums for more info.
Also our next guild meeting (this fall) will be down at Doc Sangster's in Vienna, I think come check us out.

However, the advice above is excellent....Aldo's stuff is top notch.

Doug, I am going to go with stock removal at first then I may get into forging. Crex, I'm southwest, bout 1 1/2 away from dothan al. So Aldo in jersey huh? I ran across Speedy Metals http://www.speedymetals.com/default.aspx but the smallest A2 they offer is 1/4" I was looking for more like 3/16".

I posted answers to questions here this morning, but it was before coffee, so who knows what happened. Doug- I plan on stock removal. Not committed myself to building a forge yet, but I do live outside of the city and have 1 1/2 bays of a three bay garage! So maybe.

Crex I live in southwest GA. 4.76 hours from Atlanta. Went to the guild and they are not accepting applications at this time.

Thanks man...

I can get basic tool steels locally, but order 90% of my steel from Aldo Bruno, it is worth the shipping cost.

I find this a bit disconcerting. I am an active charter member of the Georgia Guild and also a member of The Knifemakers' Guild. I know of no instance where applications have not been accepted for either organization. Please send me a pm and explain how and when you have applied, I will get this straightened out.
Also you do not have to be a member to attend our meetings, so please don't let "application" issues stop you from attending. You will be welcome.

I wasn't denied by a human per se, it just popped up on a page that they weren't accepting applications or something. It was an automated response.

UPDATE: Going to go with Aldo! He said that the shipping cost worked out to around $1 per blade extra, which was all I needed to hear because EVERYONE that I've talked to recommends him! His steel must be good! Thanks for the advice!
