Got a weird steel question

I got some steel from a guy that owns a welding/machine shop. I have a piece of 1.5" flatstock .14 something or other thick it may be .135 forgot to reset my calipers. It seems to grind differently to. Composition is more dense than mild steel. Is there a way to determine what this is? It also seems to be holding a more pure steel color than getting real discolored and rusty like mild steel.

No way to know without sending a sample off for spectrographing. Suspicion says that it's likely something in the 300 series stainless...That's common in machine/welding shops.

The down and dirty answer is don't waste your time on it.....new/know steel is cheap compared to the hours and frustration spend on "mystery" steel.
