Dye Color

I am having trouble getting the color I want when I dye the leather for my sheaths. I use Fiebing oil based dyes, have tried saddle tan and light brown. All attempts have been too dark for my taste. I would like to get a "light" brown that I have seen in many photos on the forum. Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

Buy the spirit based dyes and you can dillute with alcohol. You can also mix and overdye to get the color you want. A lot of the light color your probably talking about is the natural color of the veg tan with a sealer on it.

The oil based dyes can be thinned using denatured alcohol or even plain rubbing alcohol.
Despite the name Fiebings Oil Dyes in fact have NO oil in them - read the MSDS - they too are spirit based and are nothing more than an improved version.

Also foa lighter dye lightly dampen with water before applying the dye - this will even the dye out and will also keep it lighter. Practice on scrap and let dry completely to note the actual color - dye wet leather will always look darker than the dry end product.

Didn't know the oil based dyes were in fact spirit based, just assumed form the label were oil based. I've used gallons of the Fiebings but never any oil based , might have to try some and compare.
