13th century Moroccan style jambiyah
13th century Moroccan style jambiyah.
Designed to be worn center front on the belt with the hilt to the left. When drawn the blades in curve is along the right forearm. Here are some detail shots of the sheath shown above which has a leather core and wrapped cover with hidden seams: the back of the sheath a side view: a closeup of the embossing (embossing has no outline cutwork prior to modeling, actually more painstaking than regular carving): a closeup of the lined throat: Chuck __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Thanks.
I quit counting hours a long time ago at least when I'm doing my commercial stuff, it gets too depressing if I realize what I'm making an hour. This one is mine though and since I made everything including the blade, I let out all the stops. Had an Old Hickory 14" butcher knife and ground away everything that didn't look like a Jambiyah. It has a hidden tang and the finished blade is 7 1/2" x 1" at the hilt. The sheath has a hardened leather core which is covered with thin 2oz goatskin. The edges are sewn under the leather strips running down the side which are glued on with hide glue. The tip is 4/5 oz which was embossed and then the edges were skived down and molded to the core. Again leather strips were glued along the edge. The throat is lined to cover up the various layers and then laced around the edge. This type of edge lacing probably originated with the Arabs and was then carried to North Africa and eventually Spain when they conquered those areas. Much of my influence comes from this marriage of east meets west that occurred in Moslem occupied Spain (Spain was under Moslem rule up until the very late 1400's - Ferdinand and Isabella of Columbus fame led the final revolt). This style sheath was usually tied onto a wide waist belt, hence the four sets of laces at the top. The chape is pierced with a large Vee and is decorated with brass studs and tacks. Here is a view of the blade. Thanks Gib, but I'll make you a deal: you make the blades and I'll make the sheaths (and maybe once in a while I could do some grips???)
Collaboration is my middle name (well not really it's Louis - named after my two grandpappies I was, but you know what I mean!) __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Sandy-
It's a standing offer. Just haul your butt out here and I am sure that you could teach me just as much as I could teach you. Who knows what we might come up with! BTTT--because that is where it belongs!
I just could not miss this opportunity to gloat. It just so happens that this beautiful, inspirational example of the knife makers and sheath makers crafts now resides in Georgia. My dear friend, Chuck, gave me this beauty (Who I have named "Sasha") and it is proudy displayed in my workshop for all to see. I am taking good care of her, seeing that she is properly groomed, fed, and housed comfortably, and protected from all harm. I am indebted to Chuck up to my ears! --Sandy--

Hey,Mongoforge----now that we are in a modern age we would rather see you with a camcorder than the tape recorder and camera There are so many people out there that I will probably never meet such as yourself. I wish it were not that way as I am sure after reading your posts that we would be friends--- --Sandy--

I had to bring this back to the top for a myriad of reasons. (1) The knife and sheath are amongst the finest I have ever had to admire. (2) They were made by a very dear friend, Chuck Burrows! and (3) they were gifted to me by Chuck several years ago and are some of my proudest possessions. --Sandy--

Sandy, I'm glad you bumped this. Chuck's work is special and I have several that mean a lot to me. This piece is particularly nice. Also - in this thread above are two fellow pilgrims who are no longer with us - both really good guys - Rock and Gib. It was nice to see posts by them.
