magnetic knife props
I've tried a dozen different little gadgets to get knives to prop up. I had some rare earth rod magnets in the shop and they really work well. They come in different lengths and you can lay them 'flat' or stand them on end. These are very strong and both of these pictured could easily lift this knife. They will scratch if you let them, try not to let them or glue some fabric on the end. They will still be strong enough. I have a demagnetizer so I'm not worried if the blades develop a little magnetism. get them here: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.a...48&cat=1,42363 |

I must not have the right stuff because what I tried left oily residue. Do you recall what brand it is?

well, the one I have is called Klean Klay -- modelling clay made by Chieftan Products 265 Champagne Ave., Downsview, Ont.M3I 2C6 with a SKU 68732 30504 in the amount of 454 grams. No idea what the cost is as I bought it years ago from Curry's Art Store in Mississauga, Ont.
I don't press the material to the knife but just use it as a propping device. only need small amount. Never had a removal problem nor has Roger P when he photographs his Bowies at my setup. HTH |

I just buy a bunch of large erasers and cut them to whatever size I need. Nice idea Tracy.

Tracy, you can put a small piece of wax paper between the knife and clay, or knife and magnets. Now go find that LG.

Ya'll oughta try telekinesis - works great. Or, for the supernatural power challenged, sky hooks are handy.
When all else fails I ball up some tape, sticky side out, squeeze it into the right shape and rest the knife on it just so. |

I've been using "quake hold" museum putty and it works great for me. Still using the same ball of it and I like it better then when it was new. Use a small amount and it can hold up a knife on edge without being seen in the photo and leaves no residue.
http://www.clouddome.com/specs/museumputty.html http://www.conservationresources.com...ction39_07.htm you can find it cheaper than 4.95 and it lasts a very long time |
